Still not old!

For the first time in 21 years I celebrated my birthday. I’m not telling you how old I am, but I can honestly say, I’m still not 40! Blondelicious did a fantastic job getting it together.  Thursday we went into Warrenville to hit Two Brother’s brewery for some fun. We met up with my college roommate, had some drinks and a great time.  I love visiting breweries. Usually you can get beers there that they don’t distribute. This time was no different. They had a batch of beer they had just tapped that they weren’t bottling. It was pretty dang good, and strong!

Friday Blondelicious threw me a birthday party. My friend D helped out with decorations and even made a quest for me to do. Which was rather entertaining, if not an attempt to embarrass me with stories from my childhood AND having to profess my undying love of Taylor Swift to an entire bar? Don’t ask, I’m not telling! The best part was the cake my wife bought me. It was done up to look like the Necronomicon from the Evil dead/Army of Darkness series.  It was made of red velvet cake with raspberry filling. Very delicious.

Saturday we hit various establishments that give away free stuff to people on their birthday. We also stopped midday to get pierced again. She had her nose pierced and I finally put a ring through my right ear. So that makes 2 new piercings each in the last 3 weeks for the both of us. YAY! We also hit both of the local breweries; Pig Minds Brewing Company and Carlyle Brewing Company. Over the weekend it was brought up multiple times, which is the better brewery. I will say they both have their strengths and weaknesses. Each has beer that is good and each has beer I don’t like. I think it’s just a matter of one’s mood. Saturday night we were just checking in where we were on Facebook when we notice that one of our local favorite singers was performing that night at a bar we both like. So off we went to hear some Jimmy Buffett songs!

I really have to say that I’m glad I decided to actually celebrate my birthday this year. It was better than I anticipated.

Survived and even THRIVED!

Great Taste of the Midwest was ahhhhmazing :)  I had such a fantastic time and I didn't lose my taste for beer all day!  So many new things to try and the weather was absolutely perfect.

E.D.B. has already posted about the day and there's not much more I could add :)

Here are four of the brew I truly enjoyed:

  • Brady's Brewhouse - Cranberry Wheat Wine
  • 23rd Street Brewery - Half Day Hefeweizen
  • 23rd Street Brewery - Pomegranite
  • Two Brothers Brewing Co - Pahoehoe
I'm looking forward to going back next year, but up next is Screw City Beerfest!

Some Pics from The Great Taste of the Midwest.

Here are some pictures from our visit to the Great Taste of the Midwest.

This is the entrance to the Great Taste of the Midwest.

Blondelicious kept trying to get me to pose serious for pictures, and I just wouldn't. This is the most "normal" one we have of me by myself.

Of course I'm always up for a fun competition, how about Rock Paper Scissors for bar swag?

Even after almost 13 years of marriage, I can't help but check out Blondelicious' breasts any chance I get. Of course I'm not generally caught on film doing it.

Here we are after being told I needed to be, "Serious".

I have to give Props to New Holland Brewing company for having, what I thought, was the best theme for the event.

The Countdown begins...

....and I am nervous.

This year I am lucky enough to be able to attend Great Taste of the Midwest.  This event, AKA Beerfest, happens every year and E.D.B. has attended the past 2 years, but this will be my first. We leave on Saturday.  I have heard many stories about this event, get there early, stand in line, wait for a million tiny samples of beer, people passed out in random places and of course, the hangovers.  I have also been given a ton of advice...such as "If you don't like it, dump it on the ground" and "Eat pretzels and drink lots of water in between beers".

I plan to follow as much advice as I can remember, but I'm afraid that two hours or less into the even I might.....I can't believe I'm going to say this..... but..... I might LOSE MY TASTE FOR BEER!! *insert organ music here*

Who the hell goes to a beer fest, let alone one of the largest in the Midwest and then decides, "Meh... I don't feel like drinking beer anymore!"  Methinks I may be that person.

If anyone has any ideas on how to counteract my possible predicament, please post your responses below!  I can use all the help I can get!

Who we are.

I figured that I should give a little bit about who we are and the players in some of our stories. I'll start with myself. E.D.B.

Evil Drinking Buddy (E. D. B.): I started my love of beer when I was in college. It started when I turned 21 and I decided I wanted to try every beer that was made. I had no clue at the time that it was the start of the Craft Beer Revolution and that there would be no way possible to do such a thing. I quickly discovered that there was so much better beer than the mass produced large markets out there. Don't get me wrong, I'll still drink one, but I do prefer a good craft beer. I've been reviewing beers for over 5 years and soon I will start posting those reviews on here.

Blondilcious: My loving and and beautiful wife with whom I'm devoted to, she's the only thing I love more than beer and she'll challenge me on that. We've been married for 12 years (at the time of this post). We share a lot of the same interests and most of our hobbies are the same. I've never met another person that shares any many similar interests with me than she does. Plus, you aren't going to find any one else that is going to throw themselves on this grenade.

The Boy: Our oldest son, I haven't talked about him yet, but that's mainly because he's 19 and moved to Kansas to get a job. He used to give me a run for my money when he was growing up, but he's out of the house and is turning into a fine adult.

Clone:  When he was younger he was just like me. Same personality, sense of humor, etc. It was uncanny. We nicknamed him Clone because it was like we didn't have a son, we just cloned me. As he's gotten older he's changed and has taken on some more of his mother's traits. He's still very much like me personality and temperament ways, but is starting to go his own ways.

The family in general shares the following hobbies: Re-enacting, Canoeing, Camping, Shooting, traveling and for the adults... Beer. We also are into spirits, we don't limit ourselves.

Ta Da!

APPARENTLY.... I am a slacker...I haven't put up a single post til now.  Someone gave me hell today for not posting anything on our brand spankin' new blog.  So here I go...

I like to drink.  A lot apparently.  I used to be considered a lightweight, 3 drinks and I was down for the count til the next day.  When I learned to play 3's (A.K.A. Circle of Death) I got so drunk and then soooo sick on mudslides... yes I know.  You can stop laughing now :/  After this experience, I decided I needed to start working out.

*cue Rocky theme*

I started to drink... maybe 2 to 3 times a week at first at about 2 to 3 drinks a time.  In doing so I was able to build a tolerance to alcohol....and I kept going.  Slowly at first, but gradually increasing until I felt confident enough to try playing 3's again.  I lost.  Never one to quit, I amped up my training, started including more than just beer, but alcohol of a more... powerful nature.  Rum became my "go to" booze, and with all my training I was finally able to stay upright for several games!

Sure, it's probably not great for my liver.... and I'm sure the 20 pounds I have gained have NOTHING to do with drinking *cough* but I'm having a fantastic time being able to try and keep up with the "Big Dogs!"

Most of all I enjoy going out with my husband, putting back a few drinks and not passing out at 8:30 :D  Here at the Private Beer Stash we welcome you to pull up a chair, crack open a cold one and enjoy the show, or be part of it!

E.D.B. vs the childless night.

I use an app on my smartphone called Untappd. It allows you to track the beers you drink and keep quick ratings on whether or not you liked it. Just like any other “checking in” style apps you can earn badges. Last night I earned my 500th unique beers checked in badge. Okay, over my life span of drinking beer, it’s not that impressive.  The thing is those 500 beers were since I started using this app… just under a year ago.  The journey to getting 500 unique beers is a funny story with a lot of good beers, a ton of bad beers, mostly decent beers, and some pretty god awful beers.

It’s those god awful beers that make for the best stories, and are usually the one that ends up getting me into trouble.  Just this last Saturday, Blondelicious and I lucked into a kid free night as Clone (our youngest son who is a lot like me) was invited to spend the night at a friend’s house. Earlier that day while helping out with a Podcast regarding Beer Snobs vs. Beer Connoisseurs, it was noted that I was only 5 away from my reaching my 500th beer. Saturday night Blondelicious said we should strive to hit 500, and off we went!

We ended up at one of our local favorite watering holes, Brewsky’s. They had Southern Tier’s Unearthly on tap. I’d never had it, and even though it’s a double IPA (India Pale Ale), and I don’t like IPAs, I ordered it anyways. This was one of the worst IPAs I’ve had. It was so bad I ordered a Jack and Coke to chase it. But for every sip of beer I was taking, I needed a swallow of chaser to get it down. Finally I couldn’t take it anymore and slammed the entire pint just to finish it. The bartender and manager both said no one they have had order it has liked it. The only other they had that I didn’t like was Dad’s Little Helper Black IPA… Yes another IPA, but this is a black IPA and I thought it might be better. I was wrong. Not as bad as the first one, but still not a beer I like. So what did I do? Yep, chugged it down and then finished off my Jack and Coke. As I stated I had been drinking earlier and I just chugged 20oz of 9.5% and 6.2% ABV (Alcohol by volume) beers and slammed a 20 oz. jack and coke… in less than 10 minutes. For those that aren’t in the know, your average mass produced beer is usually 4.2 to 4.8% ABV.

Things get really fuzzy there. Then the next thing I recall is being in Blondelicious’ car and her being mad at me.  To paraphrase, “I’m not happy! It’s 8:30pm on a kid free night and you are passing out!” Fortunately I am an experienced drinker. I told her drive to a bar way out of our way so that I could sober up on the drive. We started having a conversation. She was talking about “Topic A” and I was talking about “Topic 2”. All the time I’m giving her driving directions on where to go, so we started arguing because we didn’t understand what the other was talking about, I decided I didn’t want to go to the other bar, so I gave her directions to start heading home. I was tired of arguing and it was just frustration. She didn’t realize that. She did realize we were heading a different way that she knew was wrong. This brought up another communication breakdown. This one, however, resulted in us figuring out what had happened and what went wrong. Everything smoothed out. That is when we went to another favorite bar of ours, Oasis… because I had sobered up enough to stay awake.
So the moral of the story is this my friends, If you have a kid free night, don’t slam really bad beers followed with a whiskey chaser… it just pisses off the wife.
